Do you only make blankets?

Blankets are my main focus right now, but I have woven rugs and scarves in the past. I may weave up some scarves, but will probably use my rigid heddle looms to do so.

Why do you number the blankets?

I want a photo album of sorts that I can look back on. I love creating these blankets and put a lot of care and creativity in each one. I also want anyone who receives a blanket to be able to see how it was made and where it came from.

What are your blankets made of?

FOR THE WARP: I use Harrisville Designs Shetland wool yarn. Harrisville is a wonderful company and their products are fantastic quality and lovely to work with. They also offer a wide variety of colors. This is consistent for each blanket. It takes roughly 1 half-pound cone of Shetland yarn to make 1 blanket.

FOR THE WEFT: This varies. I mostly use merino roving that I hand spin. I find it easy to work with and can find it in bulk.

Occasionally, I will ply the merino with a mohair silk blend to create a different texture.

Once in a while I will purchase whole fleeces from shepherds and farmers that I will process from raw wool. This involves skirting, scouring (washing out the lanolin), carding, spinning, then finally using it to weave. I would LOVE to do this more often once I get a better system set up to process the fleece more efficiently.

In the future, I plan to use alpaca and other materials.

Do you have a swatch kit for buyers?

Swatch kits aren't currently available for individual retail orders, but if you're a designer, stylist, or gift sourcer evaluating A Loom Away for a client project, reach out — I'm happy to send fiber and colorway samples to help you get a feel for the work.

Can I get on an email list to know when new Blankets are available?

Not yet, but I am looking into setting up a system for that.

Do you take commissions?

Not at this time. But, if you have requests or suggestions, I would be happy to keep them in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to make a blanket?

At a minimum, 15 hours. That time does not include threading the heddles, tying on the warp or wet blocking once the blanket is off the loom. It does include the time it takes to spin the weft and weave the blanket.

How many looms do you have?

I have 1 barn loom: Lady Tiller. I also have 2 small rigid heddle looms, though I don't use them as often.

How large are your blankets?

The size varies. Width is usually approximately 41" wide. The length is 50" - 62" - not incuding fring.

Why are your blankets so expensive?

Because each one takes real time and real hands. I hand-spin the wool for the weft, then prep the loom: threading the heddles, measuring the warp, and tying it on. Once it's woven, each piece is hand-hemmed and then wet-blocked to finish. Add in the cost of quality materials, and you're paying for a blanket that's made slowly, on purpose, by one person from start to finish.
